One Cold Night at the Ice Arena
You’ll never really know when or where some of life’s greatest lessons will appear to you. The question What’s Your Juice? appeared to me mid-game in a cold ice arena.
A teenage hockey player returned to the bench, visibly upset. He was openly berating himself for a bad shift. Shoulders slumped, head down, negative thoughts were spiraling out of control … he was defeated, and the game wasn’t even close to over.
As a coach, parent, or leader, you’ve seen a moment like this too many times. The employee who mentally checks out. The friend who turns one mistake into a catastrophic collapse. The talented teammate whose negative self-talk becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Many coaches in that moment would yell corrections. Some would offer technical advice. Many would just let the player sit there and stew, hoping they’ll snap out of it on their own.
I saw Coach Chris Carroll do something different.
In his characteristic upbeat voice, he simply asked: “Hey, what’s your juice right now?”
The question stopped the player cold. It was like flipping a circuit breaker. You could see the shift happen in real-time—his face changed, his posture straightened, the cloud of negativity evaporated. Within seconds, he had reset completely and was ready to move forward with improved energy, attitude, and effort.
Witnessing that moment changed everything for me.
Because I realized that simple question wasn’t just about hockey. It wasn’t even just about sports. It was about every interaction we have as coaches, leaders, parents, educators, and human beings.
Capture the power of your juice.
