"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Decoding Life
I don’t know why this memory has stuck with me. When I was young there was a talk show on where the host described how conventional wisdom isn’t always the only truth and there can be different perspectives on every issue. The show’s host said something to the effect of “1 + 1 doesn’t always equal 2” as his example. He then took a drop of water and added a second, showing how 1 + 1 = 1.
Maybe this moment is etched in my memory because I was an often struggling math student throughout school. It might also be why the zeros and ones of coding language have always intrigued me.
Even though it is present everywhere in our lives, coding can be intimidating. In its simplest form, coding is the art of instructing computers with step-by-step commands using a language of zeros and ones. The complexity of its simplicity is amazing. In a world increasingly driven by technology, this coding underpins the functionality of the modern world by powering our ubiquitous software, websites, and apps.
Why does the sequencing of these two numbers matter? Coding can provide valuable principles that extend beyond computers into our daily lives. There are takeaways from coding for self-care, personal development, and a pragmatic approach to “coding” in our own lives.
Embrace Simplicity
In coding, simplicity is essential. Clear and straightforward code is easier to understand and simpler to maintain. Simplifying goals, relationships, and decision-making reduces unneeded complexities and allows us to focus on what truly matters.
Learn from Errors
Coding errors are inevitable and, more importantly, valuable opportunities for learning and improvement. Humans embrace mistakes as stepping stones to personal growth.
Create Efficient Procedures
Coding involves the creation of efficient processes to solve problems. Our well-thought-out plans will also enhance efficiency and productivity.
Collaboration is Key
Code is written by teams of people. Teamwork enriches the human experience. Teams of people are capable of achieving remarkable outcomes difficult to achieve alone.
Be Open to Updates
Coding teaches us that frequent updates are needed to stay relevant and secure. Being open to new ideas, experiences, and points of view ensures our growth and adaptability!
"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have."
- Maya Angelou
